FAQs

1. Why do I have varicose veins?

Large varicose veins are usually caused by a faulty valve in the affected vein. This valve allows the blood to back flow from the deeper higher pressure veins into the lower pressure surface veins. When this occurs, the surface veins dilate and become visible. We always check the valves in your leg with an ultrasound to determine if you have this condition. If you do, then it is very important to correct this problem first to ensure the success of your treatment.

2. Why did my valve fail?

Varicose veins tend to be hereditary so if your family members have them then your chance is higher. Otherwise, obesity, tall stature, and excessive standing on hard surfaces contribute to varicose veins.

3. What treatment procedures do you offer?

We believe that since everyone is unique and every vein is different, we need to offer a variety of services to meet the needs of our patients. For large varicose veins, for instance, Endo Venous Laser Therapy (EVLT) is an excellent treatment. For smaller spider veins we may use sclerotherapy or ambulatory phlebectomy depending on the situation.

4. Tell me about EVLT.

Endo Venous Laser Therapy utilizes an IV placed in the diseased vein to place a tiny laser fiber into the broken valve. When the laser is turned on, the valve is closed and the varicose veins disappear.

5. Does EVLT hurt?

There is a little pain when the doctor injects the numbing medicine and feels similar to the way an injection at the dentist feels.  Usually that’s about it for discomfort..

6. Is EVLT effective?

EVLT results in complete resolution of about 98% of varicose veins compared to the old fashioned stripping techniques which caused about 40% to recur.

7. Will my insurance cover EVLT?

Most insurance companies do cover it, but for those that don’t we offer financing and credit card options. There may be other treatments which we offer that would be more effective for you which your insurance company would cover.

8. What activities can I perform after my EVLT?

Most normal activities can be resumed immediately after the procedure such as walking, running, and returning to work. We do ask that you wear tight compression stockings for 5 days after the procedure.

9. What after-effects can I expect following the procedure?

Most people will have some bruising along their inner thigh that lasts about two weeks; there is almost no pain or other after effects. Some people will experience some tightening of their thigh for several days but most people say that it doesn’t bother them.

10. What is Ambulatory Phlebectomy?

Ambulatory phlebectomy is a very effective method of removing small veins through a small needle hole that is made after numbing the skin.

11. What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is treatment for spider veins and involves injecting the veins with a small amount of a medicine that irritates the vein and therefore closes it. It is useful in small veins.

12. What about payment?

We have excellent financing available and take credit cards.  We also submit your information to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
