Varicose Vein Treatment Options Depends on the Type and Size of the Vein.

Large Bulging Veins with a Broken Valve:

These large veins are generally caused by a broken valve that causes blood to reverse its flow into the veins, increase the pressure, and cause expansion of the veins much like blowing up a balloon increases its size.

The EVLT (Endovascular Laser Therapy) procedure corrects this reversal of the blood flow and causes the pressure in the veins to become normal. This procedure is done in our office and is an excellent choice for large bulging veins of the leg.

The UGEV (Ultrasound Guided Endovenous Ablation) procedure is done in our office and involves sealing the leaking valve under ultrasound control.

Medium Size Veins with Normal Valves:

Phlebectomy utilizes small needle-like punctures to remove the small veins from your leg. It is done in our office under local anesthesia.

Foam Ablation uses small amounts of a medicine which we inject into medium sized veins to cause them to collapse. This is done in our office and requires no anesthesia.

Small Spider Veins of the Face and Legs:

Laser Therapy uses a light beam to erase the small veins. It is best for the very small blue or red veins. Laser Therapy on the legs is only done once you have completed all recommended sclerotherapy.

Small Spider Veins of the Leg:

Sclerotherapy uses small amounts of a medicine which we inject into small veins to cause them to collapse. This is done in our office and requires no anesthesia. Sotradechol is FDA approved and is used to treat spider veins effectively. It normally requires multiple treatments to adequately treat your veins.

Any or all of these techniques may be required to help you rid your legs of varicose and spider veins.

What are varicose veins and why do I have them?

Varicose veins are usually caused by a faulty valve in the affected vein. This valve allows the blood to back flow from the deeper higher pressure veins into the lower pressure surface veins. When this occurs, the surface veins dilate and become visible. Our first step with every patient is to check the valves in your leg with an ultrasound to determine if you have this condition. If you do, then it is very important to correct this problem first to ensure the success of your treatment.

Varicose veins tend to be hereditary so if your family members have them then your chance of having them is higher than average. Otherwise, obesity, tall stature, and excessive standing on hard surfaces contribute to varicose veins.

How does Lavé MD treat my veins?

We believe that since everyone is unique and every vein is different, we need to offer a variety of services to meet the needs of our patients. For large varicose veins Endo Venous Laser Therapy (EVLT) is an excellent treatment option. For smaller spider veins, laser therapy works well as does sclerotherapy or ambulatory phlebectomy.
